The countdown is on for the Indian Car of the Year (ICOTY) and Indian Motorcycle of the Year (IMOTY) Awards 2019!

December 14th, 2018, New Delhi:
The countdown to the Indian automotive industry’s most prestigious awards, the Indian Car of the Year (ICOTY) and Indian Motorcycle of the Year (IMOTY) 2019 has begun, as car and bike enthusiasts eagerly wait for Thursday, December 20, 2018.

In less than a week, veterans from the automotive world will come together at a glittering ceremony in Mumbai to honour the achievements in the Indian automotive sector.

India’s leading tyre manufacturer, JK Tyre & Industries Ltd has been associated with ICOTY and IMOTY since the inception as the sponsors of these prestigious awards.

Introduced in 2005 and 2007 respectively, the ICOTY and IMOTY Awards are adjudged by a panel of domain experts from India’s top automobile publications. To qualify as a member of the eminent jury panel, the representatives need to have a minimum of five years’ experience in reviewing and reporting about various cars and motorcycles. The jury panel holds the foremost authority on understanding and evaluating the finer nuances that set the automobiles apart. The jurors then put this knowledge to test while selecting the winners from the shortlists, all of which are highly competent in their own right.

The vehicles are evaluated on the basis of numerous key parameters, such as fuel-efficiency, value, comfort, design, performance, technology and features. A key distinguishing factor for the winners is the competency to adapt and suit the Indian roads and driving conditions. This year too, the jurors have minutely examined every car and motorcycle against the set benchmark for each category.

The excellence brought in by each shortlisted contender that are represented by India’s leading automobile manufacturers has made the final selection process highly challenging for the jury panel. This year, the competition is even more intense with 19 shortlists in ICOTY and 12 in IMOTY.

Commenting on the occasion, Dr. Raghupati Singhania, said, “The ICOTY and IMOTY awards are like the Oscars of the Indian auto industry, rewarding the most exciting vehicles that have been introduced on Indian roads this year. The awards have undergone a rich journey over the years and today they represent the highest level of credibility, judgment and recognition. The Indian auto industry is at par with the global auto industry and this has further intensified the competition and made the evaluation process tougher at ICOTY and IMOTY. I would like to thank the jury members for the task, though challenging, accomplished so well.

At JK Tyre, we believe that innovation and superior technology are the foundation for the future. This is the key reasons we have collaborated with the ICOTY and IMOTY awards since inception. I congratulate Maruti Suzuki Swift, Volvo XC40 and Royal Enfield Interceptor 650, for winning among the bests of the industry, who are equally remarkable, and for providing best-in-class value proposition to the customers.”

Every year, a panel of domain experts from India’s top automobile publications adjudges the ICOTY and IMOTY Awards. This year’s awards judged the best car and the best motorcycle from a plethora of new launches witnessed throughout the year.
The winner of the ICOTY 2019, the Maruti Suzuki Swift and the Premium Car of the Year 2019, Volvo XC40, had to contend with 17 other vehicles, who were all put through a series of rigorous tests.
Representing Maruti Suzuki Swift, the winner of ICOTY 2019, Mr. Kenichi Ayukawa, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki, said, “Swift has been one of the most loved premium hatchbacks and it is an honor to receive such an high accolade yet again. Brand Swift has consistently made us proud and has been among the top 5 best-selling cars in India for over a decade. The journey with Swift has been extraordinary and we are overwhelmed by its popularity among customers. We are grateful to all our customers for their immense trust in the brand. We also thank our Vendors and Dealers who have been supporting us to delight our customers To be recognized as the Indian Car of the Year, for three times, by an independent jury, comprising India’s leading automobile experts, makes this prestigious award even more special.”

Winning in the inaugural edition of the Premium Car of the Year 2019, Mr. Charles Frump, Managing Director, Volvo Car India, commented, “We are extremely happy that there is an extension of ICOTY IMOTY to a Premium Car of The Year, I feel there is a lot that a premium car gets to the market from top-notch technology to safety and connectivity. In a way, we are like the torch bearers of the automotive industry and it’s great to be recognized. I also thank JK Tyre & Industries for sponsoring these prestigious awards and looking forward to many more relevant categories in future especially Green Car of The Year”

The winner of IMOTY 2019, Royal Enfield Interceptor 650, had to battle it out with 11 other motorcycles.

Representing the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 which emerged as the winner of IMOTY 2019, Mr. Siddhartha Lal, CEO, Royal Enfield said, “We are delighted to win the coveted Indian Motorcycle of the Year award for the Royal Enfield Interceptor INT 650. The 650 Twins mark the beginning of a new global chapter for Royal Enfield. This acknowledgement from IMOTY's expert jury is testament that our idea of classic, fun, evocative motorcycles with completely modern underpinnings resonate with the discerning motorcycle riders”

Assessments for both the categories, the ICOTY 2019 and IMOTY 2019 were based on a series of stringent parameters, such as price, fuel efficiency, styling, comfort, safety, performance, practicality, technical innovation, build quality, value for money and suitability for Indian riding conditions.

Congratulating the winners, Mr. Yogendra Pratap, Chairman, ICOTY 2019, said, “In an unprecedented and overwhelming victory, the Maruti-Suzuki Swift became the Indian Car of the Year 2019. After a series of close contests the Swift immersed as the winner for a record 3rd time in the 14 years of ICOTY and that too a victory by nearly 30 points.
For a car to win ICOTY it has to please a wide variety of automotive journalists, petrol heads and comfort-mongers, at the same time proving its fuel efficiency and not disappointing the performance oriented.

Particularly for the premium category, the old order changed yielding place to new. Who would have thought that one of the newest entrants in the premium car space would not only win the award but also take the first two places. Remarkable and something for the others to watch out for as the Volvo XC40 takes the award”

Mr. Shubhabrata Marmar, Chairman, IMOTY 2019, said, “This was a great year with four motorcycles from completely different parts of the market vying for the ultimate award in India. The Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 didn’t even blink though. Its victory was emphatic. It’s the combination of effortless performance, good quality and a stunning price that wins. In fact, Royal Enfield’s pricing makes everything else in the premium market look expensive. The IMOTY Jury congratulates Royal Enfield!”

JK Tyre & Industries strengthens its commitment towards sustainable practices on World Environment Day
~ Commits to the goal of being a Green & Clean Company woven around a sustainable use of energy ~

New Delhi, June 4, 2021
Continuing its green journey, JK Tyre & Industries Limited (JKTIL) furthers its commitment to sustainability and emerging as a responsible corporate citizen. With an aim to reduce carbon footprint across every facet of its global business, JK Tyre has been at the forefront of advocating green manufacturing in the country ensuring that sustainability is extended beyond the products they make.

Increasing use of renewable energy

JK Tyre places focus on the use of green and clean energy, resulting in the reduction of greenhouse gases and dependence on fossil fuels. With this in focus, the company installed solar panels in its manufacturing units across Rajasthan, Mysuru, Chennai, and Gwalior to harvest 14.7MWp of energy organically.
Another ecological support initiative was replacing coal with other renewable resources such as biomass, and development of alternate green coal by planting more than 25000 bamboo trees. To reduce the green house emission further it procured wind power for its Chennai and Mysuru plants to finally reach a level of 55% of renewable power contribution in its total demand. These efforts helped JK Tyre reduce its carbon emission intensity by 53% in the last 7 years and increase renewables in its power mix to 55%, to annually increase by 2-5%.
Now, JK Tyre aims to substitute thermal energy with renewable sources and has already started working in the direction. Substitution of coal with biomass is one of the major steps taken in this regard, and the company is committed to increasing its contribution by more than 20% by the end of the current fiscal.

Water conservation efforts

With an increased focus on Water efficiency, JK Tyre has been setting new benchmarks in water conservation practices. The company is heavily engaged in activities such as harvesting pits, trenching, de-silting etc. In 2019, JK Tyre became the first Indian tyre manufacturer to participate in the CDP Water Security 2019.
The company reduced water consumption at the Kankroli Plant to 1.25 liter/kg and set a global benchmark for the lowest water use per kg of tyre manufactured anywhere. Consequentially, these efforts towards water conservation earned JK Tyre the CII National Water Award in December 2020.

Zero Waste to Landfill

Under the zero waste to landfill initiative, JK Tyre initiated the program for Zero waste to landfill. To aid this effort, the company has developed a robust integrated waste management system at all five plants and aims to reduce the quantum of waste being directed to landfills by 2-5% every year over the next ten years. For its efforts, it received a certification from the British Standards Institution, after a thorough audit in February 2021.

Commenting on the occasion, Mr. Anil Makkar, Manufacturing Director, JK Tyre & Industries said, “We at JK Tyre have always strived to achieve the quality benchmark for all our industry-leading and best-in-class manufacturing practices. Sustainability essentially has three foundations-Social, Economic and Environment, the Company's initiatives on all three fronts are unprecedented and they aspire to succeed with every passing day. Regardless of the fact that the market cycle is not in a very stable condition with the current pandemic, JK Tyre has continued its social initiatives at different locations and the achievements are evident from continuous progress in every vertical.”

JK Tyre will continue to contribute towards building a sustainable society by balancing operations with the environment, being in harmony with nature, and improving the quality of life for all. JK Tyre is a responsible corporate and giving back to the community is central to the culture of the Company. · EBIDTA stood at Rs.289 crore, a significant increase on y-o-y basis,

· PBT and PAT were recorded at Rs.75 crore and Rs.44 crore respectively

Commenting on the results, Dr. Raghupati Singhania, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), said, “The first quarter of this fiscal year started on a subdued note due to resurgence of second wave of the pandemic and lockdowns, which impacted demand. Nonetheless, we are taking judicious price increase across product categories. The Company continued to focus on replacement and export sales. At the same time relationship with OEMs are being expanded and strengthened.”

“We expect improved market conditions, emanating from higher inoculation levels and sharp recovery in economic activities, which is likely to improve sale in both replacement and OEM segments. Going forward we are optimistic and expect a healthy growth of the industry.”

Dr. Singhania further added that, “the Company continues to give utmost primacy to the well-being and safety of its employees, business partners and society. In this direction, we have launched an initiative “JK Cares” program, to support the family of employees, who lost their lives during the pandemic on three fronts – financial, educational and health insurance.”

Press Release:
A new investment will strengthen India’s efforts towards self-reliance in manufacturing, while boosting skilled job creation, exports, and sustainable growth, with IFC’s support to leading tyre manufacturer, JK Tyre & Industries Ltd.

IFC’s $30 million (about INR 240 crore) investment in JK Tyre & Industries will part-finance the expansion of manufacturing capacities and integrate advanced, resource-efficient technologies in the production of commercial and passenger car radial tyres which have better safety and longevity. IFC will hold 5.6 percent stake in the tyre major through issue of compulsorily convertible debentures (CCDs) on preferential basis.

The investment aims to bolster the company’s capital structure and increase production of energy-efficient radial tyres by more than 10 percent—from 32 million to over 35 million tyres a year by 2025.

This aligns with the national vision of a self-reliant India (Aatmanirbhar Bharat), and strong focus on industrial job creation.

The automobile industry is witnessing huge tailwinds on the back of the government’s push towards infrastructure development, higher GDP growth and large allocation of funds towards capital expenditure in India. Improved vehicle utilisation, due to last mile connectivity and vehicle scrappage policy, is leading to a cyclical uptrend in the automobile and tyre industry. The automotive industry accounts for almost 49 percent of India’s manufacturing GDP, with tyre manufacturers contributing to 2 percent, and demand is expected to grow further.

Dr Raghupati Singhania, Chairman & Managing Director of JK Tyre & Industries Ltd. said, “We recognize the trust reposed by IFC in our Company and are enthused to embark upon this new partnership. This investment will be utilised for the expansion of projects, which are not only growth-oriented but are also committed to promote sustainable development and enhancing societal value creation. Innovation and technology are at the core of each of our products, which keeps us ahead of the curve to meet the needs of our customers.”

Wendy Werner, India Country Head at IFC said, “A leading green tyre manufacturer with a demonstrated focus on sustainability, our partnership with JK Tyre & Industries will drive their capacity expansion and scaled manufacturing of energy-efficient tyres through resource-efficient tech, low-carbon solutions, and circularity. By signalling a long-term view of the industry, IFC aims to catalyse further investments and market competitiveness, and in so doing, contribute to India’s goals to become both self-reliant in domestic manufacturing, and a global manufacturing hub. We are unlocking the potential of India’s manufacturing sector to drive job creation and sustainable growth.”

JK Tyre & Industries aims to up the ante as a “Green Company” with sustainable use of energy and natural resources and robust ESG practices. The investment will support the company’s low-carbon strategy, further strengthen its ESG frameworks, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and spur climate-smart initiatives through decarbonization and sustainability advisory.
