Most of us may have inbuilt car navigation GPS units (bit expensive) or might have bought portable GPS in India or abroad. Hence, I would like to start a new thread on sharing Maps and for discussion on which Indian GPS units to buy and why based on experience.

How can we modify our portable GPS units (if bought abroad) to suit Indian software and upgrade to latest versions/editions?
website:GPS Underground :: Your Tracks Guide (mostly European and US makes and maps only; but highly technical for beginners -@thanks to Mr. Boss)

How and where we can find (not buy) and download Indian maps (for free!!) for our portable GPS units?

Can we please make this a new thread in TAI where people could help fellow GPS owners by sharing their valuable experience and maps for free?

Im not sure if there is
already any thread on this title in TAI please move this or please share.[:D]
thanks

Hi,

Have anyone used the Telenav application in iPhone/iPad which can be integrated with Sony AV receivers? seems to be a cost effective and efficient solution for GPS navigation, but I couldn't find the app in the appstore in India. Have anyone used this or any similar solutions before (in India or abroad) ?

The TeleNav website says
"It doesn't get any easier than this. Connect, select, go!
1) Download the Telenav app and connect your iPhone to your in-car Sony® A/V Receivers
2) Select The Telenav GPS icon on the iPhone and on your Sony® A/V Receivers
3) See driving directions on-screen and hear them over your car speakers"

NOTE: To use Telenav GPS with XAV-601BT, RC-202IPV cable and firmware update are required. For model XAV-601BT, RC-202IPV cable must be connected to the "AUX1 IN" jack at the rear of the head unit.

GPS unit's hardware & software are closely integrated with proprietary OS (Operating System). Hence different companies & different model over period of time are not competent with each other. If same company is marketing maps in different countries, maps of different country may be updated in device, but it is not consumer friendly & not free. Dealer might be able to do it, albeit at price.

Offline maps can be downloaded for free on smartphone & tablets, if app is free at appstore. In India, Sygic & MayMyIndia are offering free version with crippled features & paid version with all premium features.
